Nowadays, talking about religion, most people will be either Christian or Muslim, and occasionally Jewish. Other faiths do exist, but have either been pushed out by the first two, or are simply unique to a specific region and people, like Zoroastrianism.
One of those religions is Haitian Voodoo, which has lost a lot of its impact, though it still persists to this day, with its various spirits. One of those spirits is Baron Samedi, and is the loa of death. If you’re making a slot, there’s no Loa more stylish – and it seems Yggdrasil agreed, as they built the game all around him.
The title has two special features – a voodoo re-spin which can add a lot of minor bonuses, and a free spins special feature that has you drawing beneficial cards, and granting additional free spins for completing collections. Symbols include four different gemstones, as well as voodoo dolls, voodoo woman Brijit and Baron Samedi himself. Special symbols include a horned skull as a Wild, and a skull with a top hat as the Scatter.
Developer
Originally founded in 2013 by former NetEnt CEO Fredrik Elmqvist, Yggdrasil Gaming was based on a single idea – creating technologically advanced gameplay and pushing innovation forward, instead of playing things by the numbers. And it’s hard to disagree with their success.
Despite being a smaller studio, Yggdrasil’s games quickly became popular, and the studio very clearly aims for quality titles instead of just churning out cloned games in order to keep a new batch of games constantly available. In the five years they’ve been present, they’ve clearly left their mark on the industry, and their Vikings series games – Vikings go Berzerk and Vikings Go Wild are still popular and fill the top 50 spots in casino lobbies.

How to Play it
Baron Samedi is played on a 5×3 playing field with 25 fixed paylines. This means gamblers cannot turn some or all of them on or off at will to decrease their minimum bet. We have the familiar and easy to use Yggdrasil user interface – with all buttons clearly labelled and nothing being more than two button presses away.
Players can bet between $1.00 up to $1250.00 per spin, which is a massive bet range that a lot of gamblers will be happy with – especially high rollers who want to bet big, and win even bigger prizes. As with other Yggdrasil releases, there is an Autoplay option, in which you only set the amount of auto spins you play.
However, if you go into the options menu, you can set a single win threshold and a win limit. While we understand wanting to make your title look flashy and minimalistic, as that’s the ‘in’ look right now, it can be really easy to miss this.
We quite like the graphics of Barom Samedi. The background has candles, beards, a lit cigar, a bird’s skull and a potion pot, and all of these are animated. You see the potion wobbling in the pot, and the smoke of the cigar and the candle as they rise up into the air, as well as the flickering flame on the candle.
Special Features
There are two bonuses available to gamblers who want to play Baron Samedi. The first is a re-spin feature. This is activated when two Scatters are present on the playing field. The game deals players three cards, which can give gamblers a number of extra rewards.
There’s a grand total of 36 different collectable features you can draw, and for the sake of not making this review twice as long, we’re not going to list them all. In general categories, you will find super stacked symbols, mystery reels, mystery symbols, transforming symbols, Wilds, multipliers, random Wilds, and Wild reels.
The second bonus available to players are the free spins, activated when three, four or five Scatters are present on the playing field at the same time, which rewards seven, twelve or fifteen free spins with a 2x, 15x or a 1000x cash prize, respectively. Gamblers also draw three cards for each free spin. There are four decks comprised of nine mini-features. Collect all nine mini-features from that deck, and you win three more free spins.
Maximum Payouts
The largest available jackpot for players is worth 1200x the wager, which is a solid win for a medium volatility game. The RTP for Baron Samedi is 97%, which is well above average for video slots.
Summary
We liked the theme of this title. Haitian Voodoo has a whole slew of stories and ideas that remain unexplored, and we hope to see more of it in the future. The gameplay can be fun, but overwhelming at times – having 36 mini-features to keep track of can get confusing at first, but it gets better as you play more of it.
