It’s probably just a matter of time after we saw Dark Red by Triple Edge Studios – the concept of taking concepts from popular stories and remaking them into video slots has always been something that companies have done, usually with just enough of a difference in characters so that they can’t be sued if it’s a more recent title.

Still, no need to worry about such things here – with everything being a nice shade of emerald, our handsome protagonist being called Oz, and the fact’s he’s a magician – it’s a very clear reference to the Wizard of Oz. The game has access to two different special features.

The first of which are free spins, activated by collecting a certain number of Scatters, and during which players see expanding symbols. The second bonus merely allows you to pay money to re-spin a single reel. Symbols include playing card icons 10, J, Q, K and A, as well as keys, hearts books and wizards. Special symbols include the golden book, which is both the Wild and the Scatter symbol.

Developer

Triple Edge Studios is an independent studio that’s built themselves on their partnership with Microgaming, starting with their first release, Playboy Gold, which the company entrusted to this new studio. It speaks of a level of confidence that Microgaming had in placing such a powerful brand in the hands of a studio that has no presence before-hand.

Their first titles were released in 2017, which makes the impact their titles have had that much more impressive. You won’t find their titles outside of Microgaming and Quickfire, however.

In return for signal boosting Triple Edge Studios, Microgaming keeps all their titles exclusive to their platform. The studio has released only eight games as of the writing of this review – so we’re quite curious to see where they’ll go next.

How to Play it

The game is played on a 5×3 playing field with 10 fixed paylines, meaning gamblers cannot decide to turn some or all of them off to lower their minimum wager. As always, Triple Edge’s user interface is quite similar to that of Microgaming’s in-house one, with some minor visual changes here and there visible, one of the more visible ones being the spin button.

We won’t complain, Microgaming’s user interface is quite functional, but Triple Edge also has the issue that scrolling inside the game also moves the screen, as well, which is annoying when navigating the paytable. You can wager on this game by betting between $0.10 up to $25 per spin.

This is a great betting range for a great number of casual gamblers and more serious players, but we imagine more serious high rollers may find the amount offered here to not be satisfactory. Triple Edge Studios offers an Autoplay option, but do not have any ability to set win or loss limits – instead, gamblers can only pick how many auto spins the title will do.

The background image is clearly an homage to the throne room from which the Wizard of Oz commanded his kingdom – it has a large window, large emerald pillars holding up the roof, and small stairs leading up to the throne. Still, we’re a bit displeased that fancy animations are few and far between in this title. Considering Triple Edge released another title not even a week ago, it may be safe to say this title was a touch rushed to meet an end of year schedule.

Special Features

The game has two bonuses. The first, and most interesting, in our opinion, is the ability to choose to pay money to re-spin one specific reel. The cost increases the more valuable it would be to get good symbols in that particular spot. So it’s a matter of decided when it’s worth trying to re-spin, and when you should start something completely new.

The second bonus are familiar, but ever welcome free spins. Collecting three, four or five book Scatters rewards players with ten, twelve or twenty-five free spins, respectively. Collecting three or more Scatters will re-trigger the bonus, with no upper limit, meaning you could technically get unlimited free spins if you were really lucky. During free spins, one symbol except for Wilds is randomly chosen to become an expanding symbol. When it appears, it grows to cover the entire reel it landed on.

Maximum Payouts

The largest jackpot you can win in Book of Oz is worth 5000x the stake, which is a great win for a high volatility game like this one. The RTP for Book of Oz is 96.31%, and increases to 96.5% if you use re-spins.

Summary

The choice of theme seems a bit odd, considering that the Wizard of Oz ended up being a fraud, while he’s depicted here as a handsome sorcerer reigning over the Emerald city. But while the game isn’t without its charms, the wizard’s tricks weren’t enough to woo us into coming back to it.
