Genesis Gaming is the developer that created Journey To The West, or at least one of the two versions of the game that are currently available, since there are two that have this title.

The game is inspired by a famous Chinese story, originally published during the 16th century, one of the so called four great novels that the Chinese literature proposes. It’s a story that involves a monkey god, demons, priests and other characters, and I’ve found the version from Genesis Gaming to be quite well designed.

As symbols, you will find the Lotus, the Scroll Wild, the Prophet symbols (showing emperors, monks, monkey gods and pig farmers) and the Enemy symbols (three and showing a bull character, a woman and a child with horns). The image from behind the reels is that of a beautiful waterfall.

Genesis Gaming has a good collection of games to offer its players, with 150+ slot machines being available in total. They’ve been doing this since 2008, so they have the experience and the knowledge to put out a great looking slot machine that also plays well.

How To Play It

The Bet setting, which you’re picking the value for, will range from $0.01 to $2. You can have only 25 fixed lines, no less, and you will work with a betting range that will go from $0.25 to $50.

One of the things I enjoyed seeing in this game is the use of combinations which form starting from either side of the screen.

Though 90% of the games you can play these days allow only for combinations where the symbols start from the left side, here you can have them start from the right side as well. You still need matching symbols to be on adjacent positions on the same line though.

Special Features

The Lotus symbol is the wild that you can only get on the 3rd reel. Get a Lotus to be on the same reel as some of the Prophet symbols on that reel, and there will be features triggered which are associated with them.

At the same time, if you have the Lotus on reel 3, while the Skeleton Queen Battle is unlocked, then you will get that feature no matter if you have the prophet symbols in place as well.

Should the Lotus show up during a round where no Enemy icons are visible, then you will see it expand and become a giant wild which occupies two or three reels.

There is a second wild as well, one with the Scroll Wild, capable of acting as a substitute in forming new combinations, but which can’t behave as Prophet or Enemy icons, not in their bonus feature triggering role at least. You can get these wilds stacked on all the reels, and they can provide you with prizes of up to 100x.

Two additional features can be triggered by the game. One is called Prophet Enlightenment, featuring Re-Spins, a Monkey Pick Bonus, a Cannonball Bonus and a WILD Attack Bonus. The other side, the one brought on by the Enemy symbols, will be called Skeleton Queen Battle, and it’s a bonus game with 7 picks to make.

Maximum Payouts

Thanks to the feature rich action that you will find in this game, as well as the fact that the slot pays both ways, the rewards tend to be on the low side. The best one gets to 200x, so you can win $400 at most.

Summary

Journey To The West has some impressive graphics and features, so overall I’m happy with the gameplay style that it offers. The prizes that you get are not that great though, at least their maximum values.
